There are plenty of hot winter holiday destinations around the world. Most of which take endless hours to reach and are very expensive.  But there are better value options available in these straitened times.  Such as the Spanish owned Canary Islands.Enjoying similar weather to the Bahamas - at a fraction of the price.

The Canary Islands are located off the coast of Morocco.Hundreds of miles south of the Iberian Peninsula. And once were thought to be all that remains of the lost continent of Atlantis.Today they are one of the most visited destinations in Spain. Thanks to their great year round climate.

Creating the ideal environment for a thriving holiday industry.Which is dominated by Gran Canaria and Tenerife - the two largest islands. So leaving smaller islands, such as La Palma and Lanzarote relatively untouched.

Lanzarote boasts weird and haunting scenery created by volcanic activity and is extremely barren. So it can seem a little disappointing at first sight. But once on route to the resorts the island’s beauty is soon revealed.  Especially in areas such as the volcanic region, known locally as The Fire Mountains.Which are breathtaking.

There are plenty of great beaches too - especially in the south. As although small Lanzarote still has a pronounced microclimate.Making Playa Blanca the leading winter sun option on the island.

Much of it´s popularity is underpinned by high standards of accommodation.  And as a result hotels and holiday villas in Playa Blanca are in demand amongst tourists from the UK and Eire. Many of whom prefer to build their own holidays direct online.

Playa Blanca was still a building site ten years ago.Whilst hotel chains and developers started to create the modern resort that now stands today.  But the cranes and cement mixers are all long gone.Enabling visitors to enjoy Playa Blanca´s charms unhindered.

The seafront promenade is the main heart of the resort. As here locals and tourists alike can stroll and enjoy great views of Fuerteventura.
